In this paper, using a descriptive-analytical approach, the applications of the term "heart" in Nahj al-Balagha are examined. With only one or two exceptions, this term in Nahj al-Balagha refers to states within the human being. Wonder about the heart arises from the presence of diverse states and faculties inside a person and the complex relationships among them, which makes its understanding difficult. In this article, based on the categorization of the internal dimensions of the human being into cognition, emotion, and will—and by referring to the contexts in which the term "heart" is used—it is concluded that this term has three main meanings, each of which pertains to one of these realms. Sometimes, "heart" refers to the faculty of direct and indirect cognition of the soul, which is close in meaning to insight, wisdom, knowledge, intellect, and reason. Other times, it is the center of feelings such as sadness, joy, hatred, love, and fear. But in many cases, it means the faculty of will and is connected to aspiration, determination, intention, covenant, and choice—an aspect that has received less attention in translations and commentaries. Distinguishing the uses of this term within these three realms is a highly beneficial way to understand its reality, which paves the way for understanding matters of the heart such as the nature of faith from the viewpoint of the Imam.
