Discourse Analysis of Verses Denoting the Virtues of Imam Ali (AS) in the Holy Quran Based on Fairclough's Theory

https://doi.org/10.30465/alavi.2026.53289.2779

Ezzat Molla Ebrahimi, Nahideh Ghader

Abstract Today, various approaches and branches of discourse analysis are remarkably effective in unraveling the two-way connection between language and society, and they try to examine the author's ideology behind the texts and their hidden layers. One of the most famous theories in the field of discourse analysis is Norman Fairclough's critical approach, which has an efficient ability to reinterpret fundamental religious concepts and reveal hidden dimensions of meaning in sacred texts. This approach tries to express the relationship between the internal and external criteria of the text, and to examine the power that governs the society in which the text was formed, with three levels of description, interpretation, and explanation. Accordingly, the present study seeks to analyze the verses revealed in the honor of Imam Ali (AS) in the Holy Quran using a descriptive-analytical method and using Fairclough's theory. The main goal of the research is to uncover the hidden power relations and ideological foundations of the Imamate discourse through systematic analysis. The research findings show that the Imamate discourse is a divine, unified, and hegemonic discourse that is formed in structural opposition to competing discourses, such as tribalism, hypocrisy.

A reflection on Imam Ali's (a.s.) allegiance or non-alliance to the first caliph

https://doi.org/10.30465/alavi.2026.53516.2784

yadolah hajizadeh

Abstract With the passing of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), despite the appointment of Imam Ali (AS) to succeed him, especially at Ghadir, and despite the merits of the Commander of the Faithful (AS), the Muslims made a hasty and incorrect decision to pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr as the first Caliph. Abu Bakr and his supporters, especially Umar, were demanding allegiance from the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.), considering his special position. Immediately after the allegiance given to Abu Bakr in Saqifa, they tried to obtain allegiance from Imam Ali (a.s.) in any way possible. The question raised here is what was the reaction of the Commander of the Faithful (A.S.) to this request? Did he accept their request and immediately pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr, or did he consider himself worthy of succession based on what had happened in the past and therefore refused to pledge allegiance? If the Imam refused to pledge allegiance, was this refusal permanent or was his refusal temporary? Examining the issue using historical and narrative sources and using a descriptive-analytical method shows that although the Commander of the Faithful (AS) initially refused to swear allegiance to Abu Bakr due to his objection to his election and considered himself the only one worthy of ruling, he eventually swore allegiance to him in order to safeguard the interests of the nascent Islamic society.

Analyzing the Divine Imamate of Amir al-Muʾminīn over the Jinn and Its Consequences

https://doi.org/10.30465/alavi.2026.54937.2825

rouhallah kalbasi

Abstract The issue of the inclusivity of divine guidance with respect to the jinn constitutes one of the less-examined topics in Islamic theology (kalām). By presenting the jinn as accountable beings (mukallafūn) and addressees of revelation, the Qur’an demonstrates that the divine guidance programme is not confined to human beings; rather, the jinn, like humans, are charged with faith in and obedience to the divine proof (ḥujjah). The central research question of this study is how the guidance of the jinn has continued after the seal of prophethood and who serves as their religious authority. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach, and drawing upon Qur’anic verses and narrations, this article demonstrates that the arguments establishing the necessity of an infallible Imam for human beings are equally applicable to the jinn. Divine wisdom and the final revealed law require that no accountable being be left without a divine proof. The narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt explicitly affirm that the Prophet of Islam was sent to both jinn and humankind, and that after him the divine successor assumes responsibility for the guidance of both communities. On this basis, the Alawi Imamate over the jinn forms an integral part of the comprehensive system of divine guidance and the continuation of the Prophet’s mission for all accountable beings. An examination of this reality clarifies the boundary between divine Imamate and non-designated caliphates, for those caliphates that lack divine appointment and fail to encompass the guidance of both jinn and humankind cannot be regarded as the continuation of the Prophet’s universal mission.

Morphological Deviation as a Counter-Discourse Strategy in the Letters of Nahj al-Balāgha

Abstract Morphological deviation—the conscious departure from morphological norms—has the potential to function as a discursive strategy serving the stabilization of meaning and the reinforcement of the speaker's authority. Despite previous research on deviation in Nahj al-Balāgha, the counter-discursive analysis of these devices in the Letters has remained neglected. Integrating the counter-discourse approach with morphological deviation, this study employs a descriptive-analytical method based on qualitative content analysis to examine all fifty-three Letters of Nahj al-Balāgha. The findings indicate that morphological deviations occur in four major domains: deviation from present to past tense (115 cases), through violating the maxim of quality, generates counter-discourses of certainty, urgency, inevitability, and transhistoricity in political commands and descriptions of the Hereafter and death. Deviation from active to passive voice (126 cases), through the omission of the subject, activates counter-discourses of magnification, predestination, generalization, degradation, threat, passivity, and victimhood portrayal. Deviation in derived forms (4 cases) adds implications of gradualness, exaggeration, and participation to the discourse, while deviation in derivation (53 cases) and infinitives (1 case) renders concepts more objective, enduring, and transhistorical. Through these strategies, Imam ʿAlī (AS) establishes the monotheistic discourse as a stable and unalterable principle within the order of existence, elevating the Letters from administrative correspondence to a transhistorical text.

Abstract Man is a perfectionist being and needs to identify obstacles in his path to promote growth. One of the greatest hindrances to human perfection is the devil or Satan. Considering the role of Satan in misguiding man and the concurrent advice of Imam Ali (AS) in this regard can be found in his highest and most important sermon known as Qaseh, which was delivered after the battle of Nahrawan. In this sermon, the Imam vigorously tried to explain the nature of the devil, to provide a comprehensive picture of the stages of his influence on man and the strategies to deal with it. Accordingly, using the method of "content analysis" and the technique of "qualitative content analysis" in this research, the most important themes and conceptual components expressed in relation to the devil have been identified. This is while extracting the main and secondary themes, citing the words of Imam Ali (AS) in the sermon of Qaseh, to explain components such as: examining the word Satan and Iblis (the titles of the devil), representatives and confirmers of Satan, the scope of Satan's vicious activity, the factors of Satan's disgust, Satan's strategies to deceive man and the stages of his influence and finally, the doctrinal and practical strategies that can prevent the influence of the devil on man. Finally, based on the words of the Imam, an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive picture of the category of "knowing the devil".

Analysis of the Arrogance of Ali (as) and the Jews in the Khyber War Based on Van Dyke's Ideological Square

Volume 12, Issue 23, September 2021, Pages 227-250

Ebrahim Fallah

Abstract Critical discourse analysis is a visionary approach that is important in discovering the worldview of discourse. Theon van Dyke, one of the leading theorists in the field of critical discourse analysis, emphasized the ideological square theory by emphasizing that the ideological worldview can be represented in language. The present study uses a descriptive-analytical method and with the assumption that one can have a discourse reading of arrogance, examines the arrogance of Ali (AS) and the Jews in the Khyber War based on Van Dyke's ideological quadratic model in critical discourse analysis. Discover how to represent the ideology of the dialogue parties, deeper understanding of the layers of the text. The result of the research shows that in these arrogances, the atmosphere of conflict is represented by the discourse strategy of polarization between the two groups of Ali (AS) and his enemies. Similar, the absolute object of a kind and emphasis, presenting the news at the beginning and rhetorical approaches of simile, Makniyeh metaphor and lexical structures that have a negative ideological burden "Al-Kufra, the people of immorality" and lexical structures that have a positive ideological burden "Rabbi Khair Nasser, Amen Ballah" He pointed out that effective language plays an important role in marginalizing the arrogance of the opposition and propagating Islam and proving its legitimacy against the Jews.

Analysis of the Reasons Why the Leader of the Faithful (PBUH) Did Not Exercise Retaliatory Punishment for Murderers of Uthman

Volume 13, Issue 25, August 2022, Pages 93-111

https://doi.org/10.30465/alavi.2022.7963

yadollah hajizadeh

Abstract Uthman ibn Affan, the third Muslim Caliph (644-656 AD) was killed in a riot against him by some Muslims. Imam Ali (PBUH), in spite of his disapproval of such an act neither tried nor punished his murderers. The question therefore is for what reason(s) the Leader of the Faithful did not exercise retaliatory punishment (qiṣāṣ) for murderers of Uthman. Despite complications peculiar to the subject arising from different answers proposed to answer the question, the analysis of the subject, using descriptive and analytic methods, shows that although the Leader of the Faithful (PBUH) sought to deal with the issue and to punish Uthman’s murderers, lack of clarity as to who were directly involved in the murder, and specific circumstances that Imam Ali (PBUH) faced during his reign did not in practice allow him to take any action in that regard.

Abstract Peace brings security to society, calmness to the people, comfort to the army and prosperity to the cities. But these effects will come at a time when the regulations and conditions of peace are being observed. The purpose of this investigation is to study and explain these conditions from the of Imam Ali viewpoint. The findings of the investigation show that peace is inherently desirable from the viewpoint of that Imam, but provided that it has been pleasing to God and the dignity and authority of the Islamic society is preserve in it. On the other hand, the Imam mentions several points as conditions of peace, which are: awareness of the enemy's conspiracies and beware of it; Futurism and foresight and lack of suspicion to the enemy; Transparency and clarity of the peace treaty and its non- Interpretability; And ultimately adherence to peace treaties and avoiding any deception or violation of contract. Abstract Based on some hadith and historical texts, in a few cases of meting out jurisprudentially fixed punishments (ḥudūd) to exaggerators in veneration of the Muslim Prophet and his family (ghulāt), apostates, and infidels, Imam Ali (PBUH) ordered that some criminal individuals be burned, and at times he personally exerted the punishment. Shiite and Sunni sources have disagreements over some details and themes of, and facts related to the hadiths. Hadiths about burning of human beings in Imam Ali (PBUH)’s conduct include both immolation and cremation, but being choked to death by smoke from the fire should also be considered due to confusions in the texts of the hadiths. In the present study, an attempt has been made to extract all the relevant hadiths from the historical and hadith sources, and to examine and analyze their documentation. To this aim, all those hadiths with their different chain of narrators will be quoted and then critiqued

Siavash Poortahmasbi, Azar Tajvar

Although this issue and its discussion lacks a historical background, it has gained a good attention during last century. Studying citizenship from Nahjolbalaghe and Imam Ali point of view is a good way to track this issue beak in the history since both of them are regarded as brother to Quran and scholar in Islam. Imam Ali was head of Islamic government and was fully familiar with languge , religion, and racial differences political, ideological and discoursal groups were formed at that time.
In this paper a definition of citizenship and its current condition is given along with Quran s view.
