Islamic sects have not disagreed on any religious issue as much as the issue of Imamate. The difference between Shia and Sunni is not only in the person of the successor of the Prophet; rather, in each view, "Imam" has a special meaning, concept, and position that distinguishes these two sects from each other. Although much research has been conducted in this category, one of the research gaps in this field is the lack of proper use of modern research methods. One of the appropriate methods for accurately and systematically delineating the issue of Imamate in Nahjul-Balagha is the method of content analysis. Given the importance of the subject, the present study seeks to answer the question of which characteristic does Imam Ali (AS) consider most important for an Imam? In this regard, first 110 propositions were selected from the text of Nahjul-Balagha and in a table opposite each text, basic themes indicating different dimensions of Imamate were included, and each was placed under more general headings. Finally, by extracting 29 basic themes, 4 unifying themes, and 3 comprehensive themes, it was concluded that more than 70 percent of the themes are dedicated to the characteristics and attributes of the Imam, of which the most frequent is the Imam's possession of divine knowledge. مسألة امامت از دیرباز موردنظر متکلّمان و مفسّران نامدار اسلامی بوده است. فرقه‌های اسلامی در هیچ یک از مسائل دینی به مانند مسألة امامت اختلاف نظر نداشته‌اند. اختلاف شیعه و سنی تنها در شخص جانشین پیامبر نیست؛ بلکه در دیدگاه هر یک، «امام» معنا و مفهوم و جایگاه ویژه‌ای دارد که این دو مذهب را از یک دیگر متمایز می‌سازد.گرچه در این مقوله پژوهش‌های زیادی صورت گرفته اما یکی از خلأهای پژوهشی در این حوزه، عدم استفاده صحیح از روش‌های نوین پژوهشی است.یکی از روش‌های مناسب جهت ترسیم دقیق و نظام‌مند موضوع‌ امامت در نهج البلاغه، روش تحلیل مضمون است. با توجه به اهمیت موضوع، پژوهش حاضر در صدد است با هدف شناخت ابعاد مختلف امامت به این پرسش پاسخ دهد : امام علی(ع) برای امام کدام ویژگی را مهم‌تر می-داند؟ در این راستا، ابتدا 110گزاره از متن نهج البلاغه گزینش و درجدولی مقابل هر متن، مضامین پایه‌ای حاکی از ابعاد مختلف امامت درج گردید و هر یک ذیل عناوین کلی‌تر قرار گرفت. درنهایت با استخراج 29مضمون پایه،4 مضمون یکپارچه ساز و 3 مضمون فراگیر، این نتیجه بدست آمد که بیش از 70 درصد مضامین به ویژگی‌ها و صفات امام اختصاص دارد که از این بین پربسامدترین آن‌ها برخورداری امام از علم لدنّی است.
